Triumph designed it as an urban sports bike: town during the week, a ride at the weekend. Reviews published at launch rate it at its best on small winding roads at a flowing pace, and recommend it to riders stepping up to a bigger bike or returning to motorcycling.
What the Street Cup reviews say, on back roads, in town and on the motorway.
Everything happens between 3,000 and 5,500 rpm: that is where the 80 Nm moves the bike along without constant gear changes. The five-speed gearbox is well spaced and the assist clutch is pleasantly light in town. The engine lacks top-end, though: there is no point chasing the red line. The standard exhaust note splits opinion: French reviews find it too muted, British ones describe a deep, pleasant rumble.
The Street Cup uses the Street Twin's frame and 41 mm KYB fork, but its longer rear shocks steepen the steering head angle. The result is quicker turn-in with no loss of stability, and a neutral, precise bike. The 200 kg dry weight disappears once moving. The weak point most reviews mention: the soft rear shocks, which pump on poor surfaces.
A single 310 mm front disc with a two-piston Nissin caliper and ABS: enough for road riding, but most reviews advise adding the rear brake for firm stops. On the long pass descents around Grenoble, keep a margin and use engine braking. The switchable traction control is rated effective, even on cold roads.
The bars are lower than the Street Twin's and you lean slightly forward, but your wrists are not loaded. The 780 mm seat is easy to reach, a little less padded than the Street Twin's. The fly screen shields more than you might expect up to 130 km/h. The bar-end mirrors make the bike wider: take care when filtering.
From Grenoble, the Speed Twin 900 is in its element on the narrow, winding roads of the Chartreuse and Vercors: Col de Porte, Col du Cucheron, the Gorges de la Bourne, the Presles road. Its torque from 3,000 rpm saves constant gear changes between bends.
The big passes of the Oisans and Maurienne are within its reach. On their long descents, keep a braking margin and let engine braking do its work.

Triumph Trident 800 — a modern three-cylinder roadster, sportier and livelier at high revs, if you want performance rather than style.
Suzuki SV-7GX — a screen, an upright position and a big tank: the most comfortable choice for two-up riding or a long day of passes.
Yes. Its 900 cc twin delivers 80 Nm from 3,230 rpm, its assist clutch is very light and its seat is 780 mm high. Reviews recommend it to riders stepping up to a bigger bike or returning to motorcycling.

Yes, it is registered for two. The pillion seat is narrow, though: it suits a ride of a few hours rather than a long trip for two.
